Jan van Goyen

WINTERLANDSCAPE WITH SKATERS AND ARCHITECTURAL STAFFAGE

Oil on panel. 41 x 55,5 cm.
V G 1655.

The theme of "Eisvergnügen" (fun and frolic on ice) can be found in the entire oeuvre of van Goyen, but most prominently in his early work and the period between 1640 and 1650. Our painting belongs to the rare winter landscapes of the late period. In the course of the decades, the painter's attention moved away from this genre-like depiction and focused on the depiction of the winter atmosphere. Van Goyen succeeds in capturing the feeling of a dreary winter day in this "Eisvergnügen", possibly his last one.
