Jan van Goyen

SUMMER LANDSCAPE WITH FERRYBOAT

Oil on panel. Diameter 25,2 cm.
J. v. Goien 1623.

Van Goyen's circular paintings of the seasons were created between 1621 and 1630. They are mostly early works - like this and the following lot - and not as yet predominated by his later monochrome tonal paintings. In the early Leiden years, van Goyen was a pupil of Esaias van de Velde whose influence is still apparent in this and the following work of 1623. This is particularly noticeable in the staffage and also in the palette that is rich of contrasts.
