RomanticismandRealism
Connoisseurship and passion were the maxims under which a private collector put together high-ranking works by the most important masters of 19th century architecture, landscape and genre painting. The hundred or so lots include rarities such as three of the rare paintings by Leo von Klenze and special views of Venice by Friedrich Nerly. Vedute by Cornelis Springer and Michael Neher are among the highlights of this great period of architectural painting. The equally humorous and enigmatic pictorial narratives by Carl Spitzweg are crowd-pullers in major museums, and three of his genre scenes are part of this collection. Dutch Romanticism is represented by landscapes by Barend Cornelis Koekkoek, while the Düsseldorf School is represented by works by Andreas and Oswald Achenbach. Wilhelm Kuhnert, who illustrated Brehm's Tierleben with his views of Africa, provides a glimpse into the landscapes and animals of the African savannah. These are just some of the artists whose works make up this top-class collection. Lempertz is delighted to be able to sell this outstanding collection in a special auction on October 26 in Berlin.

von Klenze
“... Highlights of 19th century architectural painting. They are indispensable for a passionate and knowledgeable collection of paintings from this period.”
Domenico
Quaglio d. J.
“In addition to the remarkable accuracy in the depiction of the buildings, the atmospheric elements are particularly effective for the impact of Quaglio's paintings. In doing so, he succeeds in conveying the light of a particular time of day just as importantly as the numerous figures that animate these cityscapes...”
Carl
Spitzweg
“As an autodidact, Spitzweg was able to create his very own poetic pictorial worlds in which unusual characters frolicked and astonishing events transpired.”
Cornelis
Springer
“Springer’s vedute are sometimes topographically accurate, sometimes idealised, but always depict a special atmosphere, the mood of an evening in summer or a cold winter’s day.”
“Highlights with the Biedermeier themes of Carl Spitzweg, cityscapes by Domenico Quaglio the Younger and Michael Neher, alongside three Venice subjects by the internationally sought-after Romantic artist Friedrich Nerly.” - Handelsblatt -
Adrianus
Eversen
“His vedute show the cities in an idealised manner and evoke precisely that Golden Age when the Netherlands achieved an incalculable wealth and the arts flourished.”
Barend
Cornelis
Koekkoek
“His paintings found numerous important collectors such as the Kings of Holland, Prussia, France and the Russian Tsars.” Dr Guido de Werd
Hendrikus
van de
Sande Bakhuyzen
“Hendrikus van der Sande Bakhuyzen is considered one of the first Dutchmen to produce oil sketches for their paintings in the open air.”
Friedrich
Nerly
“Even if Nerly’s meticulous attention to detail is in keeping with Canaletto’s vedute, his atmospheric depiction of a picturesque, idealised Venice nevertheless prevails.”

Hermann
Corrodi

Hendrick
Wilhelm
Mesdag
“One has to have the sea in sight, every day, must live with it, otherwise it will lead to nothing.” Hendrick Wilhelm Mesdag
Peder
Mørk
Mønsted
“Mønsted developed a free painting technique which enabled him to depict the phenomena of nature with stupendous naturalism.”
Andreas & Oswald
Achenbach
“Andreas and Oswald Achenbach were the two leading landscape painters of the Düsseldorf School of Painting; mythologically elevating, the brothers were referred to as the ‘Düsseldorf Dioscuri’…”

Wilhelm
Kuhnert
"“The looks and moods of the animals in Wilhelm Kuhnert’s paintings make it easy for people to recognise themselves in them.” “At the intersection between Academic Realism and Impressionism, this modern painting - created in the Year of the Three Kaisers (Dreikaiserjahr) - reflects an important moment in the art and culture of the German Empire at the end of the 19th century.” "
Ferdinand
Brütt
“Ferdinand Brütt’s painting ‘In der Börse‘ (In the Stock Exchange) is characterised above all by the excellent rendering of the characters. Speculator, intriguer, gaffer, refiner, the noble merchant, the anxious calculator – each finds his type in a plausible figure.”
Eduard
von Grützner
“Grützner’s works do not have Spitzweg’s lightness, his genre scenes are… in rustic inns or wine cellars, never outdoors as in his friend’s work. His realistic painting, however, is undoubtedly impressive.”
Hugo
Kauffmann
“Whilst one often gets a better overall impression from a distance, the details only reveal themselves at close range.”
