Auction 1252 on 14th November 2024 in Cologne

Jewellery and Watches - Post-auction review

The saleroom was gripped by diamond fever as several unusual items of jewellery from a North German private collection came under the hammer. The star lot turned out to be the piece illustrated on the back of the catalogue: An Art Deco brooch with a rare natural yellow old-cut diamond weighing almost eight carats encircled by white diamonds.

The gemmological certification of the central stone's colour as “natural fancy vivid yellow” attracted the attention of numerous international telephone and online bidders, which led to a tense battle of bids, in the course of which the brooch with the lot number 106 eventually reached a sensational result of € 308,000.

Shortly before, a loose 11.34 carat diamond from the same private collection had been sold to a European art dealer for € 88,000, as well as a French Belle Époque diamond necklace with 60 graduated old-cut diamonds, which doubled its estimate to fetch € 100,000.

Major brands such as Van Cleef & Arpels also proved their appeal. A high-carat cocktail necklace from the renowned Parisian Maison sparked the interest of numerous bidders in Germany and abroad and ended up in private ownership in Germany for € 151,000. Large natural pearls are rare and extremely sought-after, as demonstrated by a Belle Epoque pendant with two fine oriental pearls, which realised a fantastic result of €50,000.

Artisan jewellery also attracted high demand and sold out almost entirely. The bold design of the technically inspired Art Deco necklace in hammered silver and onyx by Jean Després proved particularly appealing (result € 41,500).

The highlight among the watches was a German classic. The ‘Lange 1’ by Lange & Söhne, Glashütte, was estimated at € 18,000, but the winning bidder ultimately secured the watch for a price of € 31,500.

With a final result of €1.7 million, which corresponded to around 140% of the estimate prices, the auction demonstrated the strong demand for high-quality jewellery.
