Auction 1254 on 16th November 2024 in Cologne
Fine Art and 19th Century
Capricci by Michele Marieschi, Corrado Giacinto and Alessandro Rosi shine a light on Italy, as does the Düsseldorf painter Oswald Achenbach. Salomon van Ruysdael, Willem van de Velde the Younger, Pieter Fransz. de Grebber and Gabriel Metsu take a look at the Netherlands. Prominent names are also to be found in the catalog of 19th century paintings.
Vedute by Venetian artists were in particularly high demand in the 18th century, with the biggest names in this genre coming from this period, such as Canaletto, Francesco Guardi and Michele Marieschi. A pair of capricci by him shows contemporary buildings and ancient ruins, estimate € 190 / 220,000.

The Baroque master Alessandro Rosi lived and worked in Florence and was known not only as a dazzling personality of his time, but above all as a virtuoso painter. In his painting, which was probably created in the 1650s, he takes up the Old Testament theme of Hagar and the angel. In terms of composition and its vibrant colors, it is a characteristic work for the painter, which is in the auction at an estimate of € 50 / 70,000.
Around one hundred years later, Corrado Giaquinto depicted the New Testament story of the "Dream of St. Joseph ” in several versions. While a later version is in the Maldà Collection in Barcelona, this earlier version is in the auction in Cologne, estimated at € 30 / 50,000.
The Dutch Golden Age was made possible thanks to ships. They play a correspondingly important role as a subject in the art of this era. The auction in Cologne on 16th November features two outstanding examples of maritime painting. Salomon van Ruysdael is known for his landscapes, especially those depicting bodies of water. His painting of Dutch Inland Waters, probably the Wijkermeer, with a "Verkaag" ship is an excellent example of this. The painting, monogrammed on the leeboard of the boat and dated 1647, is being offered in Cologne at an estimate of € 450 – 500,000.

€
Willem van de Velde the Younger was the author of ‘Dutch Bezan Yacht in a Fresh Breeze with Other Shipping’ (lot 2035, estimate € 200 - 250,000). The painting is dated 1655, meaning that it was created when the painter was just 22 years old. However, it already shows van de Velde's outstanding talent. Van de Velde emigrated to England in the winter of 1672/73, where he continued his career as a specialist in seascapes with great success.
Gabriel Metsu has created a monument to everyday chores in the form of an exquisite "fijnschilder" painting. ‘A Woman Scouring a Pan’ (lot 2032, estimate € 120 - 140,000) is one of a series of scenes in which the painter pays special tribute to ordinary household tasks in paintings that highlight his exceptional skill. All of these works can be found in major museums today, except one: ‘A Woman Scouring a Pan’, which will be offered at Lempertz in Cologne on 16th November.

Pieter Fransz. de Grebber's depiction of ‘The Annunciation’ is a very special work. He was one of the few Catholic artists active in the Protestant northern Netherlands, and he had to work in secret when painting for forbidden Catholic churches. The patron of this painting is unknown, but the importance of the work is undisputed. It was on loan to the Lower Saxon State Museum in Hanover for almost fifty years and is now being offered in Cologne with an estimate of € 250 - 350,000.
This lavishly crafted tabernacle was created in around the year 1200 in Limoges. Only seven examples of this type are known to exist today and can be found in the Metropolitan Museum in New York, the Louvre in Paris and the Bavarian National Museum in Munich, among others. The finely engraved and partially gilded panels of the box feature a biblical pictorial programme executed in enamel. An estimate of € 70 - 100,000 has been set for this outstanding object.

‘Christ as the Man of Sorrows with the Virgin and St John’ was painted by Lucas Cranach the Younger. Multiple versions of this work are known to exist and are now held in museums. The version in Cologne is being offered at Lempertz at an estimate of € 100 - 150,000.

The 19th century sale features several works by the Düsseldorf painter Oswald Achenbach, who often travelled to Italy, including his ‘Santa Caterina a Formiello and Porta Capuana in Naples’ with an estimate of € 30 - 40,000, and a portrait of his brother-in-law, the composer Felix Mendelssohn Bartholdy, by the Berlin portraitist Wilhelm Hensel with an estimate of € 20 - 25,000.
