2020 – A record year for Lempertz

With a total of 56.2 million euro, this 175th jubilee was not only a record year for Lempertz, despite the pandemic. There were, in addition, two "white glove sales", the collections Brockhaus, Dreßen and Schwarzach (one of the most important European mortar collections), a corporate collection, as well as the Maggia photograph collection of 19th century views of Rome, and to crown it all, the famous Bischoff collection of Old Master paintings, displayed in numerous museums in Paris, Madrid, Bern, London, Bremen, Bonn, etc.

Two world record prices were achieved: the extraordinary highlight was Georges de La Tour’sGirl Blowing on a Braisier (La Fillete au braisier), the most expensive Old Master painting ever sold in Germany at 4.3 million euro - an international record for this long-forgotten artist. Further record prices were seen, such as 1.58 million euro for Praying Maria by Quinten Massys.

Lempertz has been digitally well oriented for years, and with the pandemic causing the postponement of three auctions till 2021, the company successfully sold around 80% of its offer digitally and via the telephone at its three locations in Cologne, Berlin and Brussels. Never before has Lempertz offered so many private collections as well as a corporate collection, illustrated in special catalogues.
