Brilliant start to the season at Lempertz ‘Jewellery & Watches'

Lempertz has made a successful start to the autumn season with its ‘Jewellery & Watches’ auction. Characterised by thrilling bidding competitions, the auction confirmed the high demand for exquisite gemstones and masterpieces of jewellery and watchmaking.

Coveted rarities and precious stones

An outstanding Madagascar sapphire impressively demonstrated that the market rewards uncompromising quality. Due to its deep, velvety royal blue colour, this spectacular stone was still classified by experts as a Kashmir sapphire in 2007. This exceptional quality was worth €63,000 to a successful bidder.

A veritable ‘diamond fever’ gripped the saleroom and the telephone bidders when a solitaire ring from Gioielleria Chiappe (Genoa) was put up for auction. The fascinating sparkle of the 4.40-carat cushion-cut stone captivated the audience; after a long bidding war, the spectacular piece of jewellery was finally sold to its new owner for €16,300.

Jewellery craftsmanship and aristocratic provenance

The elegant classics from the renowned Munich-based house of Hemmerle continue to enjoy unbroken popularity. A cocktail brooch from 2004 caused quite a stir: Crafted in 18-carat white gold and pavé set with 538 diamonds, this piece achieved the highest result among the Hemmerle lots at €100,000. A pair of earrings from the company more than doubled their estimated price, while other pieces, such as a necklace with a matching pair of clip earrings (result: €42,800), also significantly exceeded their estimates.

Elegant classics from Hemmerle remain popular. Several exceptional pieces from the renowned Munich jeweller drew buyers’ attention and saw exciting increases in price. One cocktail brooch stood out in particular, achieving the highest price of any Hemmerle lot at €100,000. A pair of earrings more than doubled their estimated price to €36,500, while a necklace with a matching pair of clip earrings sold for €42,800, exceeding the estimate even further.

The timeless fascination of natural pearls, coupled with an important aristocratic provenance, was evident in a necklace made of historic Oriental pearls. The piece, consisting of 97 baroque-form natural pearls, originally belonged to Countess von Tiele-Winckler (née von Lepel-Beseritz). After a captivating competition across all channels – telephone, online and in the saleroom – a bidder secured this treasure for €113,000.

In the field of modern designer jewellery, Wilhelm Nagel, the master of the Cologne School of Applied Arts, who is known among other things for designing the DFB Cup, made a strong impression. His pair of necklaces with South Sea pearls from a private collection in the Rhineland went to a new owner after the auction with a result of €8,800.

The art of watchmaking at its finest.

Haute horlogerie provided the crowning glory of the auction. A Patek Philippe (Ref. 5205g-013) sparked international enthusiasm and exceeded all expectations, fetching a price of €41,500.
