Decorative Arts - Highlights: Roentgen / Odiot / Mortar

Furniture

The high points of the furniture with an investment of € 119,000 from a German bidder was a small cylinder bureau by David Roentgen (lot 1809, € 79/80,000) and a writing desk from Dresden or Warsaw, with painted decoration attributed to the Dresden lacquer artist Martin Schnell. The two-piece is painted in the finest Chinoiserie on three sides and is in amazingly good condition. It was once owned by Edmond James de Rothschild and has now been taken on by German bidder for € 60,000 (lot 1764, € 60/80,000).

A Neoclassical ‘Universal-Necessaire’ on a stand is a very interesting piece worked by the cabinet maker Johannes Klinkerfuss in around 1795/1800 out of mahogany on softwood, with sandalwood and bronze/brass mountings. A German collector pushed the unusual furniture piece from € 8/12,000 up to € 45,000 (lot 1815). A further German collector invested € 30,000 in a pendulum clock ‘à la bacchante allongé’. The model was made in Paris at the beginning of the 19th century of fire-gilt and burnished bronze and white-veined marble, and is attributed to Pierre-Philippe Thomire (1751-1843) (lot 1833, € 6/8,000).

Important mortars from the Schwarzach collection part IV

The fourth and last part of the important Schwarzach mortar collection came with a big surprise. As the rare Gothic two-handled mortar for Willem Lurkeman was called, a fierce bidding war erupted between an English bidder and the English trade. Result: The significant 15.7 cm high, 6 kg mortar – probably made in mid or North Germany – rose from € 4/6000 up to € 131,000 (lot 617).

Silver

The top lots in the silver included a pair of Parisian trompe l’oeil chestnut pots by Charles Nicolas Odiot from 1819–1838, which made a great leap from € 18,000 to € 62,000 (lot 1021). A gilt 36-piece Régence cutlery set in its original case, furnished in the 1720s with polychrome Meissen porcelain handles by the Master Johann Engelbrecht went to a museum for € 57,500 (lot 1013, € 45/50,000). Also made in Augsburg between 1719 and 1767, a very well-preserved silver travelling service changed hands for € 35,000 (lot 1015, €25/35,000).

Jewellery & Watches

The brilliant auction was one of the best on the hose with a sales rate of 85% and 130% by value.

A courtly diamond brooch with fine Burmese rubies climbed from € 15/20,000 to € 32,500 (lot 19), and an elegant Belle Epoque brooch with a 12-carat emerald cabochon reached € 24,000 (lot 18, €10/20,000). A noteworthy, four-colour gold snuff box in its original case was a gift from King Ludwig I of Bavaria to the Mannheim wine dealer Carl Möhl in 1845 in recognition of his services to the royal wine depot, and now brought a result of € 20,000 (lot 7, € 8/10,000).

Amongst the artist’s jewellery, ten works by the renowned goldsmith Sven Boltenstern from two private German collections were particularly well-received including € 35,000 for a Toi & Moi solitaire ringmade of yellow gold and with a diamond solitaire and a sapphire (lot 108, € 25/30,000), as well as a necklace with a fine Burmese ruby for € 32,500 (lot 110, € 25,000).

For the first time, Lempertz dedicated a whole chapter to high-quality wristwatches. The most successful lot of the almost completely sold section was a rare CartierTank à Vis for € 21,000 with two dials, from the exclusive ‘Collection Privée Cartier Paris’ (lot 226, €5/7,000).

Porcelain

The auction featured, amongst other things, house painted porcelains from the collection of Dr Annedore Müller-Hofstede – the second collecting highlight of the art historian who passed away in 2017 (the classical porcelain was auction with success on 7 May in Berlin). The most significant object was a much published, museum-quality cup and saucer painted by Ignaz Preissler with the finest mythological scenes in Camaieu; it now sold for € 26,000 (lot 1543, € 8/10,000).
