Auction on 30th May 2025 in Cologne

At the beginning of the year, following successful provenance research, the gouache ‘Blick in Ebene’ by Paul Adolf Seehaus was restituted to the heirs of Jewish collector Marie Louise Stadler, having been in the Kunstmuseum Bonn since 1951. On 30th May, it will be auctioned off at Lempertz in Cologne for the benefit of Stadler's heirs.

Paul Adolf Seehaus was the only pupil of August Macke and one of the most important painters of Rhenish Expressionism. He survived his master, who died in the First World War, by only a short time, as Seehaus died of Spanish flu in 1919. He created the gouache work ‘View of the Plain’ in 1918, and it soon became part of the collection of Marie Louise Stadler, née Koppel. This important work by Seehaus was exhibited in the Berlin National Gallery as early as 1926 and has been documented in literature since the 1920s.

In 1933, Marie Louise Stadler was forced to go into exile in Switzerland. Many of her possessions remained in Germany and some of them had been lost ever since. 'Blick in Ebene', which was acquired by the Städtisches Kunstmuseum Bonn from Galerie Vömel in Düsseldorf in 1951, has now been traced and returned to her heirs. Lempertz has been commissioned to auction the gouache for their benefit. It will be offered at the Evening Sale in Cologne on 30th May.
