Modern and Contemporary Art this Autumn at Lempertz
Post-Auction Review of the Evening Sale on 29th November 2024 and the Day Sale on 30th November
Claude Monet only depicted winter once in his series of views of the Normandy cliffs. This important Impressionist work was auctioned at Lempertz for € 3.5 million. A world record was set for a sculpture by Oskar Schlemmer.
Several works demonstrated the high quality of the offerings in the Contemporary Art auction at Lempertz this season, achieving high hammer prices and selling to international bidders.
The saleroom was packed when “Mer agitée à Pourville” by Claude Monet went under the hammer at Lempertz in Cologne. Monet only depicted this landscape on the coast of Normandy during winter once in his famous series of works. It was sold to an international art dealer in the Evening Sale for € 3.5 million.

A worldwide auction record was set for a sculptural work by Oskar Schlemmer. His “Abstrakte Figur, Freiplastik G” is considered the most important sculpture of the Bauhaus movement and one of the “most interesting figures of the 20th century”, as art historian Karin von Maur, former deputy director of the Staatsgalerie Stuttgart, put it. For years, the “Abstract Figure, Free Sculpture G” was actually on loan to the Staatsgalerie in Stuttgart. It also met with great interest at the auction in Cologne. It was eventually sold to its new owner for the sum of € 780,000.

The bronze “Grasende Kuh II” by Ewald Mataré more than doubled its estimate, climbing from € 60,000 to achieve a final result of € 138,000.
There was also great demand for Contemporary art at Lempertz. For example, Gerhard Richter's “Curtain”, created in 1965 as part of the famous group of works with curtain motifs made between 1964 and 1967, was sold for € 400,000, thus doubling its estimate.
“Package on a table (Table empaquetée)” by Christo from 1961 is one of his early wrappings, which he began in the late 1950s. At € 189,000, the work achieved a result well above the estimate. The “Victoire de Samothrace” by Yves Klein also exceeded expectations. Instead of the estimate of € 80,000, the successful bidder eventually parted with € 132,000 for the sculpture.

Sam Francis' gouache and watercolour piece “Blue Drawn (SF60-1435)” from 1960 achieved three times the estimated price, with numerous international bidders on the phones ensuring a great result of € 100,000 (estimate € 30,000).

In total, the sales of modern and contemporary art and photography this weekend at Lempertz achieved a result of over € 12 million.
