Both of these Rhenish landscapes were painted by Christian Georg Schütz the Elder, one of the leading landscape painters in Germany in the 18th century. They are characterised by an idyllic atmosphere in which wealthy citizens and peasants alike go about their daily business in peace. Villages, churches and castles are distributed harmonically within the landscape without the constraints of a topographically exact illustration. The painter has composed a landscape reaching out far into the distance from a slightly elevated viewpoint, depicted in minute brushstrokes, the delicacy of which can be seen especially well in the foliage of the trees.
