George Grosz

The Abandoned House, Cape Cod (Dünenlandschaft)
Probably 1940

Watercolour, pencil and India ink on chamois-coloured light card 39.1 x 49.8 cm Framed under glass. Signed 'GROSZ' in blue brush within the composition lower left. - Corners of sheet with pinhole traces. Slightly browned in former mat opening with weak light-stain.

Regarding the colour and composition, the watercolour is reminiscent of the oil painting "Dunes of Cape Cod" (cf. Peter-Klaus Schuster (ed.), George Grosz, Berlin - New York, Berlin 1994, p. 375 with colour illus.). In 1938, for the first time, Grosz came briefly to this peninsula in Massachusetts, which is especially popular with the wealthy Americans. Since 1939, he and his family always spent the summer months in this idyllic place, its fantastic dune landscape fascinating him. The great ease with which the artist depicted nature here is particularly appealing.
