George Kars

Femme au tricot
1930

Oil on canvas 46 x 38 cm Framed. Signed and dated 'Kars 30' lower left. - Few minor losses of colour along the edges. Otherwise in very good condition.

Georges Kars was a Czech painter but completed his artistic training with Franz von Stuck in Munich and became friends with Paul Klee. His works became increasingly influenced by the Cubists' way of painting. In the 1920s he created several portraits in which dark eye slits became characteristic. Towards the end of the 1920s, a soft and elegantly curved contour line appeared more and more often in his paintings; this is ultimately also reflected in the seated pose of the “Femme au tricot”.
