"Le cocu magnifique", written by the playwright, director and journalist Fernand Crommelynck, is a farce about a man who ultimately loses his wife because of his pronounced jealousy. For a long time, Picasso had the desire to illustrate the play, which premiered in 1920 as a stage play and was filmed in 1947. In 1966, he finally realised this project in collaboration with the author's sons, the printers Aldo and Piero Crommelynck. In 1968, the series was published by Editions de l'Atelier Crommelynck with 12 etchings, four for each of the three acts. For the illustrations, Picasso used his characteristic personnel borrowed from mythology; the cuckold husband is embodied by the Minotaur.
