Three Putti with Vanitas Symbols within a Decorated Cartouche

Oil on canvas. 94 x 73 cm.

The motif of a sculpted Baroque cartouche hung with garlands surrounding a central, usually religious, motif was established by the Antwerp painter Daniel Seghers. The present work is attributed to another Antwerp artist, Joris van Son, and shows heavy garlands of fruit wound around a curved stone cartouche surrounding three central putti. These present typical symbols of vanitas - a skull, soap bubbles and opulently glittering vases as symbols of transient earthly wealth.
