An ivory netsuke of a monkey as sanbasô riding a horse, by Kazuhide. 19th century

Sitting astride, holding the reigns with his right paw and suzu bells with his left, the horse with a patterned blanket over his back and a cloth tied around its barrel, typical of horses of a shogunal or daimyô stable. The eye pupils of black horn. Signed Kazuhide.
Height 3.3 cm; length 5.1 cm

The subject refers to the custom of having a dressed monkey dance in front of the horses' stables at New Year.
