Eduard Stiegel

View of Marburg with the Old University, Lahnbrücke and Deutschherrenmühle

Oil on canvas. 105 x 147 cm.
Signed and dated lower right: E. Stiegel 1868.

This painting shows the university of Marburg above the Lahn bridge. The the core of university is formed by buildings left by the Dominican Order who founded a monastery there in the late 13th century, and which was converted to the newly-founded university in the wake of the Reformation in 1527. Whilst the tall choir of the former monastery, completed in 1320, has remained intact, the side wing which is visible in this image was torn down just a few years after the painting was completed in 1868. The university began to be rebuilt in the Gothic revival taste in 1873.
The Kassel based artist and academy professor Eduard Stiegel painted several vedutas of places in Hesse. Many such works are kept in the museums of Hesse-Kassel, for example "Blick von der Karlsaue zum Auetor" and eight further landscapes. A watercolour of this composition is also extant and is today kept in the Universitätsmuseum für Kunst und Kulturgeschichte in Marburg (32.5 x 45.8 cm, inv. no. 5089). Whilst the smaller, watercolour piece shows the same view of the university on a summer's day, the charm of this large-format painting derives from the depiction of the view as a cold, moonlit winter landscape.
