Georges Michel

Panoramic Landscape with a Village and Windmill

Oil on paper, mounted on canvas. 74 x 105 cm.

Most of what we know about Georges Michel's life is derived from records kept by his widow. He never signed his works out of principal, and very rarely dated them. His paintings often show the then rural area around Montmartre with its many windmills. The dramatic contrasts of light and shadow, the reduction of the colour palette to just a few sombre tones and the towering cloud formations characterising the present work anticipate early Romantic painting. Georges Michel is today considered one of the forerunners of French Romantic landscape painting and as an important precursor of the Barbizon School.
This painting is to be included in Michel Schulman's forthcoming catalogue raisonné of this artist.
