Johann Gerog Pforr settled as a freelance painter in Frankfurt in 1781. Like the majority of his colleagues in the city, he orientated himself heavily towards the 17th century Dutch style. This was highly popular among middle class patrons, and this allowed even “modern” painters to gain success by continuing this tradition. Whilst Pforr was inspired by the works of Philips Wouwerman, for which he was often referred to as the “German Wouwerman”, his colleague Stöcklin was influenced by Dutch church interiors, and Schütz by the river landscapes of Herman Saftleven.
