Franz Wilhelm Seiwert

Frauenbüste mit nach links geneigtem Kopf
1920

Terracotta sculpture Height 31 cm Signed 'Seiwert' in pencil on the inside and unclearly dated '1920'.

This beautiful female head with almond-shaped eyes and the remarkably arched form of the nose and eyebrows is closely connected with similar portrait heads created around 1920, some of which are even more expressive (see Bohnen 369, 370, 374). The face and bust are organically developed from the cone of clay. The supple malleability of the clay remains directly tangible, and the traces left by the fingers bear witness to the creative process. The reverse side, which can be interpreted as falling hair, has been left largely unworked.
“The majority of Seiwert's sculptural oeuvre - which seems to have reached its quantitatively and qualitatively strongest form between 1916 and 1920/21 - is, however, formed by the sombre sculptures of heads. Their expression is usually defined by suffering and is the direct result of his dialogue with the quality of the material in combination with a material-based understanding of form.” (Uli Bohnen, Franz W. Seiwert 1894-1933: Leben und Werk, Cologne 1978, p. 15).
This bust was formerly owned by the Cologne journalist, author and civil servant Hans Schmitt-Rost, who published his work under the pseudonym Fritz Franz Florian. In the 1920s he maintained close contact with the “Cologne Progressives”. After the Second World War, he was of exceptional service to the artistic and cultural scene in Cologne.
