Woldemar Hermann

Procession to Siena Cathedral

Oil on canvas. 72 x 97 cm.
Signed and dated lower right: W. Hermann 1832.

The magnificent façade of Siena Cathedral is the main protagonist of this charming veduta. It was constructed in 1284 after designs by Giovanni Pisano and was one of the first buildings in Italy to adopt the Gothic forms developed in the North West of Europe. The painter Woldemar Hermann from Dresden has enlivened this view of Siena with a procession of clerics and a gathering of the faithful, some following on their knees. Hermann worked as an architect before becoming a painter, although only very few of the around 70 building projects he was involved in has survived to the present day. As of 1848 he devoted his time entirely to architectural and genre painting, with a preference for the Italian vedutas which he studied on numerous journeys to the country. The present work, dated 1832, is an early work by the artist.
