“Girl with a Doll“, or as the artist titled it tot he reverse „Good Night“ is an elegant and perfectly preserved work by Johann Georg Meyer von Bremen, painted in Berlin in 1875. Following his artistic training at the Düsseldorf Academy under Wilhelm von Schadow and Carl Sohn, Meyer opened his first studio in Düsseldorf in 1841. His lively genre scenes, especially his scenes of children, appealed to contemporary middle-class sensibilities and were highly sought-after. He married the singer Julia Beer in 1851, and the couple moved together to Berlin, where Meyer von Bremen remained until the end of his life. He was an exceedingly productive and successful painter, and has left behind an extensive and impressive oeuvre. He painted this work in the last decade of his career and it shows with what sensitivity and brilliance the artist was able to capture his chosen subject until the end of his life.
