Georg Pencz, copy after

Cimon and Pero

Oil on canvas (relined). 77.5 x 66.5 cm.
Inscribed upper right: 15 GP 41.

The scene depicted in this work is also referred to as “Caritas Romana” and is based on an ancient Roman legend: Cimon was sentenced to death by starvation, but his daughter Pero secretly nourished him with breast milk when visiting him in prison. An initial version of this composition dated 1538 is housed in the National Museum in Warsaw (cf. Bialostocki/Walicki 1957, p. 494, no. 117). The present version is included in Dr Katrin Dyballa's catalogue raisonné (Dyballa 2014, p. 339, no. G32). Although still attributed to Haendcke in 1890, Dyballa considers it to be a copy of the work in Warsaw after Pencz, which she presumes was painted in the early 16th century by a direct follower.
