Oskar Moll

Komposition mit Fruchtschale
Circa 1931

Oil on canvas on plywood panel 57.8/57.4 x 64 cm Framed. Signed 'Oskar Moll' in brown lower left. - Minor surface soiling.

In 1925 Oskar Moll was appointed director of the academy of fine and applied art in Breslau. Moll remained head of this successful art school until it was closed for political reasons in 1932. Within his own artistic development, a change in stylistic expression can be observed during the same period. The artist sought a more meticulous structuring of the pictorial space as well as a clear and constructive two-dimensional composition; presumably through his wife, the sculptor Marg Moll, he found a model for this in the late Cubism of French artists such as Fernand Léger, Louis Marcoussis and Jean Metzinger. The “Komposition mit Fruchtschale” exemplifies this stylistic period in Moll's work. Particularly the space surrounding the picture's central motif is carried out according to a Cubist understanding of form. The fruits themselves are depicted in a more representationally precise manner, and they also stand out as the protagonists of this still life through their colour.
