Palma il Giovane is a Venetian artist of the period around 1600. He was strongly influenced by Tintoretto whose style he adopted, becoming one of the founders of the so called tenberosi, a group of artists of the 17th century that cultivated a distinct chiaroscuro in their paintings. Palma il Giovane never left his hometown of Venice with only one exception and he was one of the most productive artists of his time. In many churches of Venice and the terra ferma his works can be found until today. The provenance of this work is unknown, it first appereared in a Germany collection at the beginning of the 20th century.
