Bronze. Height 73 cm. Monogrammed and dated 'RMW 40' to back of cast-with plinth. - Dark brown, partially lighter bronze coloured patina. - Light superficial rubbing.

From 1924 to 1929, Richard Martin Werner had been one of Richard Scheibe's master students at the Frankfurt School of Art. He then received a one-year scholarship to study at Villa Massimo in Rome. After his return to Germany he worked as a freelance sculptor in Offenbach, Frankfurt and, from 1937, in Orberursel in the Taunus region. We can assume that Werner's bronze sculptures are unique pieces, as they rarely bear monograms and never have foundry stamps. They may have been cast by A. Komo u. Sohn in Frankfurt, with whom Richard Scheibe also worked.
