Oil on canvas 70.2 x 46.3 cm Framed. Signed 'Tobeen' (scratched into paint) lower right. On the reverse additionally signed and inscribed 'Tobeen 79 rue de Dunkerque Paris'. - Faint craqueleur.

Tobeen, actually Félix Elie Bonnet, lived in Paris from 1907 onwards. He achieved his artistic breakthrough in 1912, when he exhibited his work in the Salon des Indépendants and the Salon d'Automne; three of his works were shown a year later at the Armory Show in New York. Solo and group exhibitions followed in the Parisian galleries Blot (1917), Haussmann (1921) and Druet (1927). After an early phase influenced by Cubism, Tobeen moved on to a realistic-poetic style after the First World War; above all, his still lifes of the 1920s and 1930s display an affinity to the New Objectivity in Germany. Through the purchase of two of his works for the Kröller-Müller Museum in 1927 and the sale of his works through the Amsterdam art dealers Huinck and Scherjon beginning in 1928, he additionally became known in the Netherlands.
