Chancellor Konrad Adenauer and Berlin's mayor Willy Brandt were deemed antipodes in German foreign affairs, German domestic policies and Eastern policies. Stefan Moses succeeded in recording the relationship, which was defined by antipathy, of the two politicians who met as opponents in the fight for the Federal Chancellery in 1961 in a photographic sequence on the occasion of the meeting of expellees in Hannover in June of the same year: back then, the expellee organization officials had first of all planned for both of the politicians to hold a speech at the main rally. Adenauer declined indignantly and the organisers booked the SPD candidate for a youth rally for the previous day. Much to Adenauer's obvious irritation, Brandt also turned up at the main rally as head of the Berlin Silesian Youth and uninhibitedly sat down next to Konrad Adenauer - separated only by a chair - on the vip tribune. Shortly after, the empty chair was taken by Hinrich Kopf, the Lower Saxony prime minister (SPD), who endured the tense situation with a completely expressionless face.
