Lithograph on laid paper with (fragmented) watermark "Original Han Linen P & H" 37.1 x 27.1 cm (47 x 30 cm) Signed. - Inscribed in pencil in an unknown hand lower left and with blue collector's stamp lower right on the recto (not recorded by Lugt). One of the few first state proofs on this paper. - Published as title and sheet 1 of the series of 11 lithographs in: "Die Hölle", Verlag I.B. Neumann, Berlin 1919, following reworking. - Truncated collection stamp to lower right corner. Minimally browned towards margins.

Josef Dilger (1899 - 1972), originally a teacher, worked as a painter and graphic designer during the 1930s. Exhibitions in Augsburg and Munich made him known to the public in South Germany after the Second World War.
