Albert Renger-Patzsch

Mantelpavian (Sacred Baboon)
c. 1928

Vintage gelatin silver print. 22 x 16.9 cm (22.3 x 17.1 cm). Numbered 'T 131' in pencil, photographer's and copyright stamps as well as annotated in an unknown hand in pencil on the verso. - Few slight retouchings..

“And again, like in his depictions of flowers, he elevates his motif to the archetypical. The baboon's head displays an almost regal dignity, his gaze fixed upon the distance and his splayed fur worn like royal insignia. However, nothing has been deliberately arranged, there are no “artistic” retouches to soften the stark objectivity of the image, and the materiality is depicted with uncompromising clarity” was Carl Georg Heise's comment on the present image in the book “Die Welt ist schön”, published by him in 1928 (Carl Georg Heise, in: Idem (ed.), Die Welt ist schön. Einhundert photographische Aufnahmen von Albert Renger-Patzsch, Munich 1928, p. 9). This shot and the following two photographs were all taken in Dresden zoo.
