Blue crossed swords mark. Flaking restorations to the lid and tail fin. H 20.5, L 24 cm.
2nd half 19th C., the model by Johann Joachim Kaendler, April 1770.

The following entry can be found in Kaendler's workshop records for April 1770: "1. Einen großen Delphin modelliret daß solcher statt einer Terrine oder Suppen Geschirre kann gebrauchet werden, es ist solches Modell 14. Zoll lang, öffnet sich mitten im Corpus, so daß man an deßen auf den Rücken geschwungenen Schweif den Deckel sehr füglich öffnen kann. Das Maul hält solcher Delphin etwas offen, und spritzet aus solchem Waßer wie auch aus den Nasen Löchern heraus, welches an und vor sich selber besonders seiner Vielen Schuppen halber sehr mühsame Stück auch Zerschnitten und Zum abformen befördert." (Transcription Pietsch, Leipzig 2002, p. 186.) Under no. 4, also April 1770, a butter dish formed as a dolphin is recorded without dimensions, so this piece is presumably the tureen.
