Ludwig Wilhelm Wittich

"Blick aus einer italienischen Villa. Eigene Erfindung."

Graphite drawing on paper. 51 x 80 cm (paper dimensions).
Framed under glass.
Signed lower right: L. W. Wittich.

The title of this drawing, “View from an Italian Villa. Own Invention” is lifted from the records of the Academy exhibition of 1832 and given by the artist. Ludwig Wilhelm Willich published Schinkel's architectural designs, and thus it comes as no surprise that his imagined villa appears to be inspired by Schinkel's “Altes Museum“, opened in 1830. The building references the Berlin architect's broad gallery of Ionic columns and the statues of the Dioscuri. But instead of locating it in a park, the artist places his building in an idealised Southern landscape with a magnificent pine tree.
