A Sèvres porcelain plate with a fable from the "fond pourpre" service

"Assiette plate" model. The well painted with a motif from a fable by the French author Jean de la Fontaine (1621 - 1695), inscribed in purple "no. 45. le Lion et le Moucheron." Bordered by gilt tendrils on faux porphyry ground. Red stamped mark M. Imp.le de Sevres, BT in gold (for Boitel), D 23.7 cm.
1806.

The sale of this service is documented in the manufactory archives under the number “MNS Vbb2” on 17th August 1807. It was acquired by Jean-Jacques Régis de Cambacérès (1753 - 1824), the arch chancellor of Napoleon, who in turn presented it as a wedding gift to Princess Stéphanie de Beauharnais on occasion of her marriage to the Grand Duke of Baden. Alongside numerous other pieces, the service included 72 plates decorated with views of France and Italy, genre scenes, and fables.
