August Sander

Lumpenball
1928

Vintage gelatin silver print. 12.7 x 8 cm (13.9 x 8.8 cm). Photographer's blindstamp lower left. - Matted.

Sanders Lumpenball photos illustrate the vibrant art scene of the 1920s in Cologne. The photographs show, among others, the then 27-year-old photographer Hannes Maria Flach (second from left) together with his girlfriend Luise Charlotte "Lotte" Fahrig (to the left) at one of the Cologne Carnival Balls in 1928. Flach moved in the circle of the Cologne progressives, to whom Sander was also closely connected. The promisingly begun career of the young photographer, whose works showed early signs of New Vision (Neues Sehen), was brought to an abrupt end by his murder in 1936.

Provenance

Estate of Hannes Maria Flach
