Watercolour and ink brush over pencil and black chalk on brownish plain drawing paper 35 x 45 cm, framed under glass. Monogrammed k in pencil lower right. - Browned; the colours partly faded.

We would like to thank Wolfgang Henze, Wichtrach, for kind information. Concerning the examined work, he explained:
"The watercolour 'Stafelalp vor Wolkendecke' belongs to a group of watercolours which Kirchner painted in 1917, presumably as the earliest one on the Stafelalp, on a - regrettably - not very durable brownish paper and, as he could not write in this time, which he monogrammed with a rudimentary 'K' in pencil (lower right)." (W. Henze, in a message dated 2 November 2010). The original vivid colourfullness of the sky and the meadows in the foreground has suffered due to ageing, however the blue and green shades and the black are well preserved.

With a certificate of authenticity by Wolfgang Henze, Ernst Ludwig Kirchner Archiv Wichtrach/Bern, dated 17 February 2011; the work is recorded in the archive of the complete work of E.L. Kirchner and will be included in the catalogue raisonné.
