Yousuf Karsh - biography

As the son of Armenian parents, Yousuf Karsh was forced to flee from Turkey via Syria to Canada in 1908 at just age 14. In Canada he was able to stay with his uncle, a photographer who recognised the boy’s talent early on and sent him for training in Boston. Karsh opened his own studio in Ottawa in 1931 and concentrated primarily on portrait photography. He rose to international fame after taking a now famous portrait of Winston Churchill after a speech in 1941. Karsh was a master of lighting, paying special attention to the sitter’s face and hands.
