PORTRAIT OF A COUPLE IN A RIVER LANDSCAPE

Oil on canvas (relined). 82.5 x 100 cm.

According to the database of the RKD, The Hague, the painting has beemn attributed to Gonzales Coques and an unknown Flemish master, both references having been questioned. An earlier attribution to the circle of Benjamin Cuyp was rejected by B.J.A. Renckens in a letter dated 15.9.1959, he considered it to be closer to David Teniers and with respect to the landscapes of Jan Wildens. Fred Meijer orally suggested an attribution to the circles of Jan Mijtens and Adriaen van de Velde.
