A 14TH CENTURY MAASLAND IVORY FIGURE OF THE MADONNA AND CHILD

Ivory, the crown lost, Maasland early 14th C. (GR 2.372)
The right hands of the Virgin and Child both lost. A small loss to the front edge of the plinth. Fine vertical cracks. Yellowing. Height 31 cm.

A 14th century Maasland ivory figure of the Virgin and Child. Carved in the round. Minimal remains of a previous partial polychromy. The figure has been designed for a frontal viewpoint, but has been carved in such detail that it can be viewed in the round. The Virgin stands with her torso arched slightly backwards and her right foot to the side in a balanced contrapposto. Her head turned slightly to the side, she carries the infant Christ high at her waist whilst he holds an apple. Her crown is lost and Her veil is draped elegantly around her body and that of the Child, before falling in cascades to the side. The Virgin's cloak and dress lead the play of drapery down to her feet.
