Jan Albertsz. Rotius

Portrait of a Lady

Oil on canvas (relined). 67 x 56 cm.
Signed upper left: JARotius faciebat (JAR as a monogram).

Jan Albertsz Rotius was born in Medemblik in 1624 and was active in Alkmaar, where he joined the Guild of Saint Luke, and Hoorn, where he died in 1666. Little is known for sure concerning his apprenticeship. Houbraken reports that he was taught by Pieter Lastman, but this is impossible since this master is known to have died in 1633. The quality of Rotius' painting and the influences of artists such as Bartholomeus van der Helst could indicate that he was taught in Amsterdam.

Certificate

Raffaella Colace, Cremona, undated.

Provenance

Formerly on loan to the Fogg Art Museum, Cambridge/Mass. (labelled to the frame "Fogg Art Museum Loan 573.1934").
