An unusual Tokyo school ivory netsuke of a laughing Fukurokuju, by Hôkoku. Late 19th century

Seated in wide trousers and reading in a scroll held with both hands, his high hat in Korean style, the patterns of the garment (chôji and shippô) inlaid in black wood and silver, the belt inlaid with mother-of-pearl. Carved in three parts. Beneath the oval base the seal-type signature Hôkoku (Yoshitani) in red lacquer.
