Oswald Achenbach

A View of Castel Gandolfo from the Park of the Villa Doria in Albano

Watercolour. 36 x 52 cm.
Framed.
Signed lower right: Osw. Achenbach.

This previously unpublished watercolour by Oswald Achenbach originates from the important Dutch Tutein Nolthenius collection. In the estate inventory compiled by the daughter of the collector in 1902 after his death in 1889, this watercolour is listed as no. 5 (inventory still extant). The brightly lit scene in the park of the Villa Doria can be dated to 1860. Two painted works by the artist from the same year entitled “Villa Doria in Albano” exist and are kept in Düsseldorf and New York (M. Sitt: Andreas und Oswald Achenbach. Das A und O der Landschaft, exhib. cat. Düsseldorf 1998, p. 200). This work appears to be a plein air study for the painting “Saltarellotanz mit Blick auf Castel Gandolfo” kept in the Wallraf-Richartz-Museum in Cologne, with an almost identical motif. Achenbach's works in oils were usually painted in his studio in Düsseldorf, which explains many of the differences in lighting. For example, in the oil painting inspired by this piece, the bright, cheery light filtering through the leaves in the watercolour is replaced by a subdued and shadowy atmosphere (illus. M. Sitt, op. cit. p. 118).
