Franz Marc

Landschaft bei Meran (Schenna)
1913

Tempera and pen and ink drawing on sketchbook paper with perforated side margin and rounded corners 20 x 12.5 cm Framed under glass. Titled 'Schenna' in pencil lower left and numbered '31' right.

This work in tempera is from a sketchbook with the number XXXI, which was used in 1913 and formerly contained 55 pages. Inspired by the journey that he made to Tyrol in that year, the sketchbook contained also the sketch for the later painting “Das arme Land Tirol” (Hoberg/Jansen vol. I, no. 212) located at the Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum New York and other important depictions of animals featuring very intense colours and inspired by the alpine world of Tyrol (see comparative ill.). In contrast to these sketches corresponding more to ideal images of the alpine fauna, the work offered here - featuring the view of Schenna castle - represents a study of specific, real architecture in the town located between Bolzano and Merano. The selected detail is interesting as it actually shows the elements of the various abstracted buildings piled up in perspectival foreshortening, simultaneously accentuating the mountainous landscape. It is the only purely architectural image known from this sketchbook, taken apart today.
“In late March Franz and Maria Marc journeyed to South Tyrol, in order to visit Maria's ill father at the sanatorium in Merano. They used this opportunity to familiarise themselves with the castles and churches of Val Venosta [...]. The deep impression which the medieval world of these churches and the steep alpine landscape of South Tyrol left with Franz Marc can clearly be traced in his work. [...].” (Exhib. cat. Munich 2005/2006, Franz Marc: Die Retrospektive, p. 317).
