A silver relief with the deposition of Christ

Rectangular relief depicting the depostion of Christ after a design by Guglielmo della Porta (1500 - 1577) in a giltwood frame. Unmarked, the back of the frame with an inventory seal of the Princes of Anhalt-Zerbst, hand numbered 558. Partially worn, with various cracks to the margins. Backed with thin card. H 25; W 16 cm.
Presumably Italy, 17th C.

Certificate

We have a written attribution of the design to Guglielmo della Porta by Davide Gasparotto, curator of the J. P. Getty Museum, Los Angeles. Dr. Gasparotto compares the work to similar reliefs in the collection of the Vatican Museum, the carving of which is attributed to della Portas' Flemish assistant Jacob Cobaert.

Provenance

Formerly owned by the Princes of Anhalt. According to a label on the reverse, the piece was purchased from Princess Hilda von Anhalt-Zerbst in 1926.
