Albert Flamm

The Via Appia

Oil on canvas. 76 x 115 cm.
Signed and dated lower left: A. Flamm.

Albert Flamm joined the Düsseldorf Academy in 1837, where he initially studied architecture. His switch to painting is recorded in the student lists of 1840/41 with the simple phrase “wurde Ostern Maler” (became a painter in Easter). Flamm mostly painted Italian landscapes, especially those of the Campagna. He was a close friend of Oswald Achenbach and travelled with him to Italy several times. The broad trail leading into the landscape, the rustic figures, and the architectural ruins on the right edge of the work are typical elements of this painter's Italian vedutas, which were always bathed in soft Mediterranean light. Ketterer of Munich sold a variation of this work with identical dimensions as lot 48 on 25.5.2016.

Provenance

Aristocratic ownership, Rhineland.
