Vintage gelatin silver print. 27 x 21 cm. Blindstamp at lower left. The edges hand-boardered in black ink. Mounted on original cardboard 44 x 33,8 cm, there signed and dated in pencil at lower right, titled at lower left. Inscribed 28 in pencil on the verso . - Residues of former cover sheet mounting at left edge.

Size, mounting and inscription of the print indicate that Sander envisaged it for his cultural work "People of the 20th Century". The farmers from Leuscheid, here named "village philosophers", belonged to the portfolio "farmer types". In this portfolio Sander collected photographs showing farmers of diverse age, regional origin and social status.
