A Berlin KPM porcelain plate "Tempio del Sole e la Luna"
Model no. 1103. The well painted in imitation of micromosaic with the temple of Venus on the Forum Romanum surrounded by a laurel wreath. The cavetto painted to imitate lapis lazuli, the border with Neoclassical rosettes on red ground. Signed "Maywald". Blue sceptre mark with blue dash below, impressed 25, incised III, black owner's monogram E.A.F.C. for Ernst August Fidei Commis. D 24.2 cm.

Heinrich Friedrich Wilhelm Maywald joined KPM as an apprentice in 1780 and took over the running of the decor department in 1807. Like the previous lot, this plate was also shown at the Academy exhibition of 1812, and is described in the accompanying catalogue as "a plate, painted with a view and a laurel wreath in the manner of Roman mosaic, by the director of the painting department Mr Maywald" (Wittwer, p. 203). The central Roman motif is thought to derive from an Italian fan made in 1788 and purchased in Rome.
