An important Southern French mortar made for a monastery

Golden brown cast bronze with fine dark brown patina. Thick-walled, squat conical form with pronounced moulded rim. Eight moulded ribs surround the body and a fine relief mascaron decorates the centre. To both sides fine laurel wreathed medallions with conjoined monograms and depictions of Christ beneath a canopy and the Virgin and Child enthroned. The rim inscribed and dated on a broad banderole "DEVS OVINOS CREAVIT ET PAVIT SIT BENEDICTVS IN AETERNVM 1609". The handles formed as stylised sheep. H 28.3, D 44.6 cm. Weight 85,0 kg.
