A ZANDE IVORY TRUMPET
By Chief Songo, Poko village, Democratic Republic of the Congo

Finely engraved geometric ornament on the raised embouchure, the body incised all over with scenes of everyday life; figures, animals, pots, musical instruments and weapons, and inscribed: Songo, Assali Avungura Poko, Polo, Akengai, Commandant, Uele, fine creamy patina, woven fibre wrist cord.

The trumpet is signed by Chief Songo of Rungu village, an Avongara chief and carver who was actively working at the time of the 1909-1915 expedition sponsored by the American Museum of Natural History and led by Herbert Lang and James Chapin. A figure and a gourd, both signed by Songo, are now in the collection of the American Museum of Natural History and are illustrated in Schildkrout, E. and Keim, C., African Reflections: Art from Northeastern Zaire, New York, 1990, pp.247 and 253. They also published a photograph of Songo on p.247.
