Three Paintings with the Magi Caspar, Melchior and Balthasar

Oil on canvas (relined). Each 68.5 x 59 cm.

This impressive series depicting the three Magi has not yet been attributed to any particular artist. Individual depictions of the three Kings such as this are rare in the Northern Netherlands, and have thus far only been found among artists of the Utrecht School, so that the present works are most likely to be localised there. The three paintings follow the same compositional scheme, depicting the kings in close-up bust format, each holding aloft one of the three gifts of gold, frankincense, and myrrh. The relationship of the three works to each other is additionally accentuated by their poses: One faces left, the other right, and the third is depicted near frontally with his face turned only slightly to the left.
