A Meissen porcelain milk jug from the Third Half Figure Service

Pear-form jug with a rounded handle and small triangular spout. Decorated to each side with large purple lustre cartouches hung with coloured leaves in puce and iron red containing finely painted exotic figural scenes. With "indianische blumen" below the spout and beside the handle, and two Chinoiserie figures drinking tea to the lid. Enamelled crossed swords mark. Minor wear to the gilt edging. Restorations to the edge of the lid. H 12.3 cm.
The porcelain before 1723, the decor attributed to Johann Gregoerius Hoeroldt, ca. 1724.

Literature

A further milk jug from this service formerly belonging to the Hoffmeister Collection (cat. vol. 1, Hamburg 1999, no. 32), then to the collection of Said and Roswitha Marouf (in: Pietsch, Passion for Meissen, Stuttgart 2010, no. 21). Hoffmeister invented the name and concept of the “Third Half Figure Service” (ibid. p. 62).
A large assortment from this service first published in: Pietsch, Johann Gregorius Hoeroldt 1696 - 1775, Dresden-Leipzig 1996, no. 61 - 79, at this point still dated to 1725. A pair of teabowls and a pair of two-handled beakers, both with saucers, in the Wark Collection (Pietsch, Early Meissen Porcelain, London 2011, no. 112 - 115), now dated to 1724.
